Thosamling Institute Opens in India, Offers Instruction to Buddhist
Practitioners
Thösamling Institute was named by His Holiness Dalai Lama and serves two
purposes:
- The Nunnery has open its doors to the new residents in July 2003 and a second Tibetan
language program will start in September 2004, for one year
with option for an advanced level-second year. This course is open not only to
the nuns but also to monks and laypersons.
- Thösamling is located in Dharamsala, near His Holiness Dalai Lama's
residence and the temporarily residence of His Holiness Gyalwa Karmapa. His
Holiness Gyalwa Karmapa visited our place in November 2003 and give his
blessing.
The nunnery, its vision:
- To create a place for ordained women to study Buddhist philosophy and
Tibetan language and practice together in a supportive spiritual community.
- To create a place where students of all four lineages of Tibetan Buddhism
can study, teach and practice in harmony and mutual respect.
- To offer suitable long and short term retreat facilities for nuns and
women.
- To establish a formal exchange program enabling Tibetan, Indian and other
Asian nuns to study with and teach other nuns, so we are able to build up a
steady and strong Sangha community.
The Tibetan Language Program
It is important for Buddhist nuns to learn the Tibetan language very well, to
read and understand the scriptures so that they are able to discuss the texts
directly with their teachers. This will help them develop to higher levels.
Thösamling Institute organizes its language course not only for Western Buddhist
nuns but will also allow Buddhist lay practitioners to join in its
study-program.
We ask the students one year commitment. At the end of the first year, after
evaluation of the class we will organize the second year advanced studies. After
the study-program of two years the students will be able to speak fluently
Tibetan and to read the Buddhist texts.
