ARTEMUS B. ENGLE
BIOGRAPHY
Artemus B. Engle has studied Tibetan Buddhism for more than thirty-five years, and has worked with Geshe Lobsang Tharchin on a number of translations of Buddhist texts. He is currently a fellow at the Tsadra Foundation.
Engle completed translation projects under the auspices of the Institute for the Advanced Studies of World Religions, and received his Ph.D. degree in Buddhist Studies from the University of Wisconsin. He helped found the non-profit Mahayana Sutra and Tantra Press, which publishes translations and edited transcripts of oral teachings.
He has provided commentaries on Nagarjuna's Letter to a Friend and Liberation in Our Hands, and he has been the principal editor for works such as Six-Session Guru Yoga, a commentary on a devotional work by Panchen Lama Losang Chökyi Gyeltsen, and Sublime Path to Kechara Paradise. Under the sponsorship of the Tsadra Foundation he has prepared translations and commentary on the works of Vasubandhu and Sthiramati.
He has focused much of his work on the psychology of spiritual development, the theory of mental states found in Indian and Tibetan Abhidharma literature, and development of explanations of how knowledge of this subject matter can enhance an individual's spiritual practice. This can be of benefit to Western students and practitioners, helping them identify specialized terminology and its implications and relevance to understanding Buddhist doctrine and practice, identifying and explaining the various milestones of spiritual development.
