ABOUT THE CALENDAR

The information provided is taken from the Rigpa Tibetan Calendar, 2010-2011. This calendar is published through the efforts of Sogyal Rinpoche and the Rigpa Shedra Centers. Purchase of the calendar supports the important Tibetan cultural tradition of calendar computation and astrological forecasting, which continues to be used in Tibetan communities around the world.

To better understand this calendar, note the following:

  • In this timeline the western days of the month are listed first, then the Tibetan days (in parentheses).
  • In the Tibetan calendar some days are doubled or omitted. Special days which fall on double days are usually celebrated on the second day, but may be celebrated on the first day if it is more convenient for the practitioner. Special days which fall on missing days are usually celebrated on the preceding day.

In addition to special days, a number of other days are listed in the Tibetan calendar, such as:

  • Dakini Day—celebration and tsok feast
  • Guru Rinpoche Day—celebration and tsok feast
  • Full Moon
  • New Moon
  • Drubjor (Attainment of Success)
  • Inauspicious days to raise new prayer flags (generally Monday is not a good day and Friday is very good)
