ACTIVISM

Take action to FREE TIBET! Here are some things you can do yourself:

  1. Be Informed
First, you may want to become informed about Tibet. Here are some materials that may interest you.

  2. Get involved locally: we have a list of events that are happening around the world. Check to see if there is something in your area.

  3. No Olympics for Olympics for China Until Tibet is Free

Beijing has been granted the Oylmpics for 2008. Human Rights and Tibetan support groups urge PRC to clean up its act or the Olympics will be boycotted. For more information click here or visit www.tibet.org/sft.

    You can show your support

  4. The Panchen Lama: The World's Youngest Political Prisoner
In 1949, Tibet was invaded by China. Since then, it has remained under occupation by the Chinese goverment. Tibetans today continue to be silenced and imprisoned for speaking out in defense of the environment, culture, religion, and their political beliefs.

Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, the boy recognized by His Holiness the Dalai Lama as Tibet's second most important religious leader- the Panchen Lama- is one of the young victims of China's brutal repression of the Tibetan people.

Determined to control religion in Tibet, the Chinese authorites kidnapped this young boy and his family just days after he was recognized as the Panchen Lama. He is growing up under house arrest. Despite repeated appeals to gain access to him, no international agency or human rights organization has been allowed contact with the young Panchen Lama or his family. To date, their well-being and whereabouts remain unconfirmed.

But the story is not over. Your efforts as part of the Panchen Lama Pact Team can affect the future of this boy's life and the future of Buddhism in Tibet.

You can help free the Panchen Lama. Visit http://www.savetibet.org/ panchenlama/index.htm for more information, history, and action.

  5. Adopting a Political Prisoner
is a great way to raise awareness of Tibet in your community - and it can result in his or her freedom. Pick a
political prisoner; organize talks on their situation; try to correspond with them. Even if they aren't freed, experience has shown that prisoners are treated significantly better when Beijing knows the world is paying attention.

One prisoner in particular cries out for attention. This is the sixth year that the eleven-year-old Panchen Lama is spending in prison. We all need to step up our efforts to set him free. Contact the Students for a Free Tibet at sft@igc.org for ‘Panchen Lama Pacts’, a great new booklet of postcards and action ideas that will increase pressure on the leaders of China and the world to free the world’s youngest political prisoner.

For help figuring out which prisoner you should choose, contact the SFT office. There are thousands to choose from. Adopting a prisoner may not save him or her; it certainly won't free them all. But every time you speak up for one innocent prisoner, you put a little more hope in a prisoner’s heart, and a little more fear in a tyrant’s.

  7. His Holiness the Dalai Lama: A Life's Calling
A small group of individuals, each who can claim to be a close friend or a devout student of the Dalai Lama, have come together to established a foundation in the Dalai Lama's name with his blessings and his permission; to use his name as inspiration and as a rallying point, and to work for world peace. We are happy to extend this opportunity to all who consider themselves a friend or student of the Dalai Lama, who wish to come together and work towards a better world.
