Buffalo Prepares for Dalai Lama's Visit
After months of preparation, the University at Buffalo is poised to welcome His Holiness the Dalai Lama when he visits the Amherst, New York campus September 18-20, 2006. With the theme, "Promoting Peace Across Borders Through Education," His Holiness's visit will include multiple engagements and plenty of cultural programming to set the stage.
Highlight of the visit will be the Dalai Lama's public lecture in UB Stadium on September 19. On September 18, His Holiness will participate in an interfaith service to include a wide range of religious groups.
Indeed, visitors to UB during this period will be treated to a multifaceted presentation on the Dalai Lama and Tibetan Buddhism. On September 18, it is anticipated that Philip Glass, who wrote the music for the film Kundun, which depicts His Holiness's early life, will be featured in a concert launching the Center for 21st Century Music. Following the concert, Glass will discuss the composition of the Kundun score and the film will be screened as well. The next day, Glass will perform his own compositions in advance of the Dalai Lama's main speech. Also performing will be Tibetan flutist Nawang Khechog.
On September 17, the Mystical Arts of Tibet tour--featuring the Multiphonic Singers of the Drepung Loseling Monastery--will perform "Sacred Music, Sacred Dance" at the Center for the Arts. The troupe will be in residence for several days, working on a mandala sand painting to be consecrated September 16.
As part of this visit, His Holiness will address the opening of the "Law, Buddhism and Social Change" conference, September 20-22, which brings to campus Buddhist experts and leading professors in law and philosophy. Also planned is an exhibit from the Rubin Museum of Art, as well as displays of Tibetan art and Buddhist art on loan from private collections. Other activities include a multimedia exhibit throughout September entitled "The Dalai Lama: His Life and Thought" For more information, visit www.buffalo.edu/dalai_lama.
