Course Description
Anger plagues all of us on a personal, national, and international level. Yet, we see people, such as H. H. the Dalai Lama, who have faced circumstances far worse than many of us have faced—including exile, persecution, and the loss of many loved ones—but who do not burn with rage or seek revenge. How do they do it?

This series will present a variety of Buddhist methods for subduing and preventing anger, not by changing what is happening, but by framing it differently. We will also discuss anger's relations with other emotions such as attachment, fear, and depression. No matter what our religion, learning to work with our anger effectively benefits everyone seeking personal happiness as well as world peace.

Course Overview

Session One: What is anger? How does it operate in us? How does anger manifest in our body and mind? What is patience?

Session Two: Coping with criticism, blame, and the betrayal of trust. How to work with the judgmental mind and transform it into seeing the beauty in others.

Session Three: Anger and attachment, fear, and depression. How can we let go before these emotions destroy our happiness? How to generate love in difficult situations.

Session Four: Anger at ourselves, cultivating love, compassion, and tolerance for ourselves and others.

2006 Chenrezig and the Cultivation of Compassion Retreat

Ven. Thubten Chodron will be leading a retreat on Chenrezig and the Cultivation of Compassion at Cloud Mountain Retreat Center in Washington state, June 9-16, 2006.

Compassion brings joy into our lives and enables us to live in a meaningful way. Compassion is a quality that can be actively cultivated, expanding it so it permeates our relationships with friends, enemies, and strangers alike. Retreatants will meditate on Chenrezig, the Buddha of Compassion, following the guidelines of Ven. Chodron's new book, Cultivating a Compassionate Heart, and she will teach the lojong (thought transformation) text, "108 Verses in Praise of Great Compassion." While there will be time for discussion and questions, the retreat in general will be conducted in silence.

For more information call Cloud Mountain Retreat Center at (888) 465-9118 or (360) 274-4859, or visit www.cloudmountain.org.
