KINDNESS, CLARITY, AND INSIGHT 25th Anniversary Edition

by H.H. the Dalai Lama, trans. & ed. by Jeffrey Hopkins, co-ed. by Elizabeth Napper

Kindness, Clarity, and Insight is widely considered the most readable, yet substantive and wide-ranging, of the Dalai Lama's works. This celebratory new edition of the very first book of teachings by the Dalai Lama in the English speaking world coincides with the twenty-fifth anniversary of that historic first teaching series in North America. Translated into twelve languages, it is a testament to the kindness, clarity, and insight of its author.

The teachings in this book comprehend and encapsulate in a crisp and concise manner all of the topics to which the Dalai Lama returns repeatedly—the core subject matter of Tibetan Buddhism. Readers of this single volume, undaunting in size, will be well prepared for understanding all of the Dalai Lama's subsequent books. This book remains the heart-message of this great world leader.

Nearly twenty-five years after its original publication, Kindness, Clarity, and Insight is still widely considered the most readable, yet substantive and wide-ranging, of His Holiness' works. Broad in scope and revealing the depth of his knowledge, these teachings display the range of the Dalai Lama and his message, covering a plethora of topics, including: the need for compassion, the common goals of the world's religions, karma, the four noble truths, the luminous nature of the mind, meditative concentration, selflessness, the two truths, and the fundamental innate mind of clear light that all the various schools of Tibetan Buddhism aim at manifesting. Although others in Tibet have mentioned that all orders of Tibetan Buddhism have the same basic outlook, the Dalai Lama is the first to explain in detail how this is so, his brilliant syncretic exposition being the final chapter in this book.

The book's twenty chapters are deftly arranged in a developmental sequence so that readers easily understand the background needed to appreciate the more complex, later topics. Taken as a whole, the teachings in this book provide an accessible map of Tibetan spiritual culture.

"Despite the numerous titles that have come out bearing the Dalai Lama's name since its first publication, Kindness, Clarity and Insight is considered his "heart message" to the West—a foundational key to understanding his other work. The new edition includes an enlarged photo section that adds previous unseen, archival color images. Also included is a substantial new preface by Hopkins that gives a fascinating look at the Dalai Lama's first American tour."—Ashé Journal

"Offering remarkably enduring insights into the wit and wisdom of the Dalai Lama... very strongly recommended."—The Bookwatch

"Though he is one of the most erudite scholars of one of the most cerebral of all the world's philosophies, he has a gift for reducing his doctrine to a core of lucid practicality, crystallized in the title of this book, Kindness, Clarity, and Insight. 'My true religion,' he has said, 'is kindness'."—Time Magazine

"...gives the most comprehensive picture of contemporary Tibetan Buddhism."—San Francisco Chronicle

"...provides both an excellent introduction to Tibetan Buddhism and a clear picture of the Dalai Lama."—Parabola Magazine

"A tidy introduction to Tibetan Buddhism that Jeffrey Hopkins calls 'a map of Tibetan spiritual culture'."—Shambhala Sun

"...whatever the subject, they all seem infused with a special quality that individuals and whole audiences of people note when they encounter His Holiness: an unmistakable emanation of kindness and compassion." —Yoga Journal

"An early collection of [the Dalai Lama's], Kindness, Clarity, and Insight, compiled after his first travels to the United States, remains invaluable."--Pico Iyer

His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was born to a peasant family in the Amdo region of northeastern Tibet in 1935, and was recognized at the age of two as the reincarnation of his predecessor, the Thirteenth Dalai Lama. Today, he is considered the world's foremost Buddhist leader. The exiled spiritual head of the Tibetan people and a Nobel Peace Laureate is a remarkable Buddhist teacher and scholar. In addition, he has also become a global spiritual leader, whose commitment to peace and nonviolence has been widely recognized, and whose message of universal and individual responsibility has won worldwide admiration and acclaim. He travels extensively, speaking eloquently in favor of ecumenical understanding, kindness and compassion, respect for the environment, and, above all, world peace.

Jeffrey Hopkins, Ph.D., served for a decade as the interpreter for the Dalai Lama. A Buddhist scholar and the author of more than thirty-five books, he is Professor Emeritus at the University of Virginia, where he founded the largest academic program in Tibetan Buddhist studies in the West.
