STANDING GREEN TARA (Newari style) Card

by Robert Beer

This exquisite painting of the goddess Green Tara (Tibetan: Drolma Jang)- the female bodhisattva of love and compassion- was made by the contemporary Nepali artists and brothers, Dinesh and Uday Shrestha of Kathmandu. It is painted in the modern inspirational style of Newar Buddhist art, as developed by the great Newari artist Siddhimuni Shakya. The outer frame of the the painting is embellished with magical creatures; the Kirtimukha or 'face of majesty' is at the top, two dragons holding jewels write along the side panels and two hybrid creatures known as Makara or 'crocodiles' appear in the lower corners. The divine form of Green Tara stands in a graceful posture upon a moon disc and lotus, holding the stems of two utpala lotus flowers of compassion in each hand. She is adorned with the heavenly attire of divine silks, golden ornaments and jewels.
