MEDICINE BUDDHA Card
By Robert Beer. Iconography explained.

#BDC20 - $ 1.50
(Tibetan: Sangye Menla) The meditation practice of the Medicine Buddha is employed to removed all afflictions of body, speech, and mind. He is also known as the 'King of Vaidurya Light', where the Sanskrit term vaidurya- meaning blue beryl- describes his radiance of lapis-lazuli light. He is seated in vajra-posture upon a moon disc and lotus, and wears the three monastic robes of a Buddha. His right hand is extended downwards in the boon-granting gesture of generosity, and he holds the stem of a triple-fruited myrobalan between his thumb and index finger. His left hand rests upon his lap in the gesture of a meditation and holds a blue alms-bowl of vaidurya gemstone, which contains medicinal nectar and another myobalan fruit. In Tibetan medicine the myrobalan (aruna) is known as the 'King of Medicines'. In the two lower corners are offerings of colored jewels.

MILAREPA Card
By Robert Beer. Iconography explained.

#BDC78 - $ 1.50
Milarepa is shown in his cave, in meditative posture. Milarepa--the cotton-clad yogin--is Tibet's most famous and beloved poet-saint. Revered for the depth of his realization and extraordinary ability to transmit the Buddha's teachings, Milarepa wandered the terrain of eleventh-century Tibet and Nepal guiding countless followers through his songs of liberation. His intense determination and perseverance under the tortuous guidance of his Tibetan guru, Marpa, and his spontaneous outpouring of a hundred thousand songs, serve as the most poignant biographical inspiration of spiritual endeavor. He is depicted sitting upon a black antelope skin in his meditation cave on the eastern side of Mount Kailash. He cups his right hand to his ear in the gesture of singing, and with his left hand, he holds a cup of nectar.

(Tibetan: Padma 'byung-gnas) Padmasambhava- the 'lotus-born' or 'precious guru' (Guru Rinpoche)- was the great eighth century Indian scholar and tantric master who is renowned for establishing Buddhism in Tibet. His complexion is flesh-colored, and he sits in the posture of royal ease upon a moon disc and lotus. His ornate 'lotus hat' is tipped with a vajra and vulture feathers, and he wears jeweled ornaments, a white under-robe, a blue and purple silk robe with a coiled copper neckpiece, a red robe of a Buddhist monk, a fur-lined outer cloak of dark red silk, and ornate shoes. These attires symbolize his mastery of the various yanas or Buddhist paths. He bears a tantric staff or khatvanga in the crook of his left arm, and holds a vajra in his right hand, and a skull cup of nectar containing a jewelled longevity flask in his left hand. On his lower right is his Indian consort Princess Mandarava, who holds a silk divination arrow and longevity flask. On his lower left is his Tibetan consort Yeshe Tsogyal, who holds a skull cup of nectar in her right hand and makes the gesture of protection with her left. Above his head is red Amitabha Buddha.
