ECHOES FROM AN EMPTY SKY: The Origin of the Buddhist Doctrine of the Two Truths
by John B. Buescher

176 pp., 6" x 9".

#ECFREM - regular price $ 16.95
Our Price $8.47

Published by Snow Lion

The important Buddhist doctrine of the two truths- conventional truths and ultimate truths- is the subject of this book. It examines how the doctrine evolved within early Buddhism from efforts to make sense of contradictions within the collected sayings of the Buddha. The two truths, however, came to refer not primarily to statements or language, but to thre realities to which statements or language referred. As such, the doctrine of the two truths became one through which Buddhist philosophers focused their efforts to elaborate an abhidharma, a "higher teaching," which allowed them to explain how the mind apprehends and misapprehends the world, how it attaches itself to objects that do not exist in and of themselves, thereby creating suffering. In effect, the doctrine then evolved into a distinction between different sorts of objects rather than a distinction between different sorts of statements. The doctrine of the truths, understood in this way, played a key role in the articulation of the Mahayana by its followers in distinguishing it from what they called Hinayana, especially in defining the central ideas of selflessness and emptiness. Unlike prior books on this topic, which concentrate on the doctrine within the context of the Mahayana, Buescher's examines it within the context of the Hinayana.

ENTHRONEMENT: The Recognition of the Reincarnate Masters of Tibet and the Himalayas
by Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Taye, translated and introduced by Ngawang Zangpo

190 pp.

#EN - regular price $ 14.95
Our Price $7.47

Published by Snow Lion

Even the most casual contact with the culture, politics, or religion of Tibet and the surrounding region brings outsiders face-to-face with the institution of reincarnate spiritual masters. Past masters are identified as small children, installed in their predecessor's monastery in a ceremony called enthronement, and educated to continue the work of their former incarnation. This custom has provided a principal source of spiritual renewal for Himalayan Buddhists for the past thousand years. The introduction places the subject of reincarnate meditation masters within two major contexts--the activity of bodhisattvas, and in modern Tibetan society, where the reappearance of past masters is both natural and profoundly moving. Tai Situpa Rinpoche, a contemporary reincarnate master and a leader of the Kagyu lineage describes the process of finding other reincarnate masters. Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Taye, an outstanding writer and meditation master offers a traditional view of the enthronement of reincarnate masters. "A sort of: What You Always Wanted to Know About Reincarnation but Were Afraid to Ask."--Publishers Weekly

The Seventh Dalai Lama was one of the most beloved Buddhist masters--he had an outrageous sense of humor which found its way into his spiritual compositions. His popular Gems of Wisdom contains spontaneous verses employing earthy metaphors to illustrate key points--he uses metaphors like farts, body odor, slimy monsters and mindless lunatics to present the teachings. Simple yet direct his language captures the spirituality of his vision while avoiding religiosity. Here are Buddha's teachings in the context of mind training. Mullin translates and comments on the quintessential meanings of the Seventh's verses.

It is to marvel at the sophistication of an ancient, literate, humanely organized society, that tries to maintain Buddhist ethical principles in its institutions, laws, and practices.
