ENTHRONEMENT: The Recognition of the Reincarnate Masters of Tibet and the Himalayas
by Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Taye, translated and introduced by Ngawang Zangpo

190 pp.

#EN - regular price $ 14.95
Our Price $11.96

Published by Snow Lion

Even the most casual contact with the culture, politics, or religion of Tibet and the surrounding region brings outsiders face-to-face with the institution of reincarnate spiritual masters. Past masters are identified as small children, installed in their predecessor's monastery in a ceremony called enthronement, and educated to continue the work of their former incarnation. This custom has provided a principal source of spiritual renewal for Himalayan Buddhists for the past thousand years. The introduction places the subject of reincarnate meditation masters within two major contexts--the activity of bodhisattvas, and in modern Tibetan society, where the reappearance of past masters is both natural and profoundly moving. Tai Situpa Rinpoche, a contemporary reincarnate master and a leader of the Kagyu lineage describes the process of finding other reincarnate masters. Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Taye, an outstanding writer and meditation master offers a traditional view of the enthronement of reincarnate masters. "A sort of: What You Always Wanted to Know About Reincarnation but Were Afraid to Ask."--Publishers Weekly

THE ESSENCE OF OTHER-EMPTINESS
by Taranatha, trans. & annotated by Jeffrey Hopkins, in collaboration with Lama Lodro Namgyel

154 pp.

#ESOTEM - regular price $ 16.95
Our Price $13.56

Published by Snow Lion

Jeffrey Hopkins continues his groundbreaking exploration of the Jo-nang-ba sect of Tibetan Buddhism with this revelatory translation of one of the seminal texts from that tradition. Whereas Dol-bo-ba's massive Mountain Doctrine authenticates the doctrine of other-emptiness through extensive scriptural citations and elaborate philosophical arguments, Taranatha's more concise work translated here situates the doctrine of other-emptiness within the context of schools of tenets, primarily the famed four schools of Tibetan Buddhism, through comparing the various schools' opinions on the status of the noumenon and phenomena. Also included is a supplementary text by Taranatha which presents the opinions of a prominent fifteenth-century Sakya scholar, Shakya Chok-den, and contrasts them with those of the leading Jo-nang-ba scholar, Dol-bo-ba.

ESTABLISHING APPEARANCES AS DIVINE: Rongzom Chökyi Zangpo on Reasoning, Madhyamaka, and Purity
by Heidi I. Köppl

Cloth. 160 pp., Tibetan text included.

#ESAPDI - regular price $ 29.95
Our Price $23.96

Published by Snow Lion

Rongzom Chökyi Zangpo's concise treatise Establishing Appearances as Divine sets out to prove the provocative point that everything that appears is actually the deity manifest. Transformation of both one's identity and the environment is an important principle of Tantric Buddhist philosophy. In Tantric scriptures one is instructed to visualize oneself as a deity, a divine identity who resides in a perfect sphere. By repeatedly training in this visualization one perfects the transformation and ultimately becomes the deity itself. Do the Tantric teachings hold sentient beings to be intrinsically pure and divine, or do they consider them initially flawed, to be later purified through the visualization of divinity? Is the practice of deity yoga merely a means, or is it more fundamentally connected to the nature of things? These questions were among the main concerns of Rongzom Chokyi Zangpo, the illustrious philosopher of the Nyingma School of the Early Translations. Establishing Appearances as Divine sets out to prove the provocative point that the tradition still highly regards the point of view that everything which appears is actually the deity manifest.

THE FOUR NOBLE TRUTHS
by Ven. Lobsang Gyatso, trans. by Sherab Gyatso

96 pp.

#FONOTR - regular price $ 9.95
Our Price $7.96

Published by Snow Lion

After his enlightenment, the Buddha taught the Four Noble Truths--the foundation and essence of all forms of Buddhism. The first truth diagnoses the nature of our existential illnesses and neuroses. The second explores their causes and conditions for arising. The third shows that the causes of our problems can be removed and that we can be free of suffering. The fourth includes the many paths Buddhism offers to realize that goal. The Buddha has shown that the spiritual path is pragmatic and works directly with everyday experience in order to fundamentally transform the practitioner. This presentation is a succinct and a very clear introduction to the Buddha's core teaching.

Ven. Lobsang Gyatso was born in Kham province, Tibet, in 1928 and educated at Drepung Monastic University. In 1973, with the blessing of H.H.the Dalai Lama, he founded the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics in Dharamsala, where he has been the Director since its inception. He lectured in many countries and authored numerous books and articles. Above all, he was a meditation master who demonstrated in his life the Buddhist philosophy of wisdom and compassion.

The Abhisamayalamkara summarizes all the topics in the vast body of the Perfection of Wisdom sutras. To understand this extraordinarily condensed text, it is necessary to have the assistance of reliable Indian and Tibetan commentaries. Together, they not only discuss the "hidden meaning" of the Perfection of Wisdom sutras—paths and grounds—but also serve as a basis for further reflection on the explicit topic of these sutras—the principle of emptiness—and how it is to be understood on the progressive levels of realization of bodhisattvas. Thus, these texts describe what happens in the mind of a bodhisattva who meditates on emptiness, making it a living experience from the beginner's stage up through buddhahood.

HOW KARMA WORKS: The Twelve Links of Dependent-Arising
by Geshe Sonam Rinchen, trans. & ed. by Ruth Sonam

141 pp.

#HOKAWO - regular price $ 15.95
Our Price $12.76

Published by Snow Lion

We all want to find happiness and be free from suffering. Happiness comes from positive mental states and actions, and suffering from the opposite. The twelve-part process of dependent arising shows how actions underlain by ignorance propel us from one rebirth into another, keeping us trapped in suffering, and how through understanding reality correctly we can break this cycle. The four noble truths, the twelve links of dependent arising, and the two truths regarding conventional and ultimate reality, all interrelated, form the very core of the Buddha's teaching. The many different practices of sutra and tantra become meaningful and purposeful only when they are based on a good understanding of these fundamental and seminal principles.

Their subjects ranged from philosophers to gardeners, economists to spiritual leaders, doctors to patients. The result was incredibly moving. The Hodges' installation consisted of a large, circular arrangement of mounted iPods on which the interviews played simultaneously, each on its own screen. Now this unique record has been made available for a wider audience; it includes both a book and a DVD so that the interviews can be viewed as they were seen in the original exhibit.

IN PRAISE OF DHARMADHATU
by Nagarjuna, commentary by the Third Karmapa, translated and introduced by Karl Brunnhölzl

Cloth. 432 pp.

#INPRDH - regular price $ 29.95
Our Price $23.96

Published by Snow Lion

Nagarjuna is famous in the West for his works on Madhyamaka, but his poetic "collection of praises"—headed by "In Praise of Dharmadhatu"—is largely unknown. This book explores the scope, contents, and significance of Nagarjuna's scriptural legacy in India and Tibet, primarily focusing on the title work. The translation of Nagarjuna's hymn to buddha nature—here called dharmadhatu—shows how buddha nature is temporarily obscured by adventitious stains in ordinary sentient beings, gradually uncovered through the path of bodhisattvas, and finally revealed in full bloom as buddhahood. These themes are explored at a deeper level through a Buddhist "history" of mind's luminous nature and a translation of the text's earliest and most extensive commentary by the Third Karmapa, Rangjung Dorje (1284-1339), supplemented by relevant excerpts from all other available commentaries.
